Adobe has released it’s first-ever open source type family: Source Sans Pro.

The Open Source Font movement has picked up the pace recently as internet consumers enjoy web fonts as internet developers migrate toward HTML5 and CSS3. Adobe has also faced pressure after web developers slowly stopped developing in Flash which was followed by Apple publicly dropping support for Flash. The result of a long disagreement between open web standards and consumer driven standards.

With the release of Source Sans Pro it appears that Adobe are embracing change in a minor way for an enterprise yet the web community will benefit the most.

The font name is a good one. As we know ‘sans’ is without and Adobe Source Sans Pro is clearly
letting loose of the source code of quite a nice font.

Welcome, Adobe.
